The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated fowl, a subspecies of the red jungle fowl. As one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, with a population of more than 24 billion in 2003, there are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming both their meat and their eggs.

But a chicken is more than food and eggs. Once you get to know one up close and personal, you will realise what wonderful little creatures they are. Intelligent, beautiful, clever, innovative and very resourceful, each one has a personality of his/her own. I've experienced that they can grieve the loss of one of their own and that they can be kind and loving if treated right. The more love you bestow on a chicken, the more you will be rewarded with love in return.

There is nothing more exhilarating than holding a chicken close and feeling her snuggling up to you, her warm neck resting on your shoulder, totally relaxed and happy with being loved.
